Corfu, being the northernmost island of the Ionian complex, constitutes an impressive amalgam of Greek and Italian influences. Wander around CorfuĒs ancient town, which is built between two Venice-style castles and enjoy its narrow streets, small squares of its wonderful historic centre and the typical image of the laundry hanging out of the windows to dry, making the whole scene very picturesque.
The glamour of the capital town looks very much like the one of the cities of southern Italy. Enjoy its beauty early in the morning to avoid the touristsĒ “invasion” later on. It is truly magical!
Spianada is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The Archeological Museum, the Royal Palace, the Byzantine Museum and St. Spyridonas Church are considered as the islandĒs top highlights.
Visit the southern part of the town to enjoy the amazing panoramic view from the old cannon at the small islands, namely Blacherna, Pontikonissi. The wonderful monastery of Vlacherna, towering above the small island is considered as one of the islandĒs best sights.
PrincessĒ Sissy fans should not miss paying a visit at Achillion, the popular resort of the empress which is built at the heart of a verdurous luxurious garden with a view of the town of Corfu.
Situated just 13 km from the town at its southwestern side, the village of Pelekas has the most amazing view. At its highest spot, you may admire “KaizerĒs throne”, an imposing rock wherefrom King George II used to enjoy the sunset.
Heading towards the north, situated in a nice location you will find PalaiokastritsaĒs Bay with its 6 mini sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. The area is considered as a top destination even if it is over-crowded during summertime.
This wonderful decoration constitutes the perfect background for the monastery of Mother Mary.
